Negro History Week, the precursor to Black History Month, was founded in 1925 by Carter G. Woodson to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. By the 1940s, Negro History Week was widely celebrated and had become a central part of African American culture. Early ephemera from these celebrations, however, remains extremely scarce.
